About the MUHAS Probiotic Study
The positions are part of a Hybrid Type II effectiveness-implementation research study led by the MUHAS Department of Paediatrics and Child Health.
The study will evaluate the delivery and safety of multistrain probiotic supplementation within routine neonatal care for low birth weight late-preterm and term infants in selected health facilities in Dar es Salaam.
The project covers three districts and nine health facilities:
Temeke District
- Temeke Regional Referral Hospital
- Mbagala Rangi Tatu District Hospital
- Yombo Vituka Health Centre
Ilala District
- Amana Regional Referral Hospital
- Kivule District Hospital
- Buguruni Health Centre
Kinondoni District
- Mwananyamala Regional Referral Hospital
- Mabwepande District Hospital
- Sinza Health Centre
The research is intended to generate evidence that can contribute to policy and clinical practice concerning probiotic supplementation for low birth weight neonates.
1. Project Coordinator – 1 Post
The Project Coordinator will oversee the overall implementation of the study across the nine participating facilities and three districts.
Key Responsibilities
The Project Coordinator will:
- Manage study implementation throughout the 24-month project.
- Supervise District Coordinators.
- Coordinate field-level research activities.
- Ensure adherence to the approved study protocol.
- Oversee the supply chain for the probiotic study product.
- Work with the Data Manager to monitor data quality.
- Coordinate adherence-monitoring activities.
- Manage serious adverse event escalation according to study requirements.
- Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
Applicants should have:
- A Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Bachelor of Surgery qualification from a recognized university.
- A one-year internship certificate.
- Registration with the Medical Council of Tanganyika.
- A valid practising licence.
- At least three years of clinical or research experience in maternal, newborn, or child health.

2. District Coordinator – 1 Post
The District Coordinator will serve as the operational lead for study implementation within the assigned district.
Main Responsibilities
The position involves:
- Supervising implementation across one hub and two spoke facilities.
- Conducting monthly supervisory visits.
- Supervising and mentoring Research Nurses.
- Monitoring study product stock and integrity.
- Reviewing REDCap data quality.
- Resolving data queries with Research Nurses.
- Coordinating laboratory sample dispatch documentation.
- Ensuring adverse events and serious adverse events are reported within required timelines.
- Maintaining working relationships with Medical Officers-in-Charge.
